Whether you’re looking for easy experiments for kids, fun learning ideas, or just something cool to do with balloons and baking soda, this one hits all the marks. Add some food coloring for a mesmerizing twist!

Ingredients

2 tablespoons baking soda

1/2 cup vinegar

1 balloon

1 small empty plastic water bottle

1 funnel

optional few drops food coloring

Instructions

1. Using a funnel, pour 2 tablespoons of baking soda into the balloon.

2. Pour 1/2 cup of vinegar into the plastic water bottle.

3. Add a few drops of food coloring to the vinegar if using.

4. Carefully stretch the balloon’s opening over the bottle mouth without spilling the baking soda in.

5. Once sealed, lift the balloon upright so the baking soda drops into the vinegar.

6. Watch the chemical reaction inflate the balloon.

7. Discuss and enjoy the visual effects.

Notes

For the most dramatic effect, use a clear balloon and neon food coloring.

Make sure the balloon is tightly sealed over the bottle to prevent any gas from escaping.
