Description

Easy Soft Pretzel Bites are the kind of warm, chewy snack that instantly makes any afternoon feel better. Golden on the outside, fluffy in the middle, and topped with just the right sprinkle of salt, they are perfect for game day, party platters, quick snacks, easy appetizer ideas, and homemade comfort food cravings. This easy recipe brings bakery-style pretzel bites right into your kitchen with simple pantry ingredients and a foolproof method that works beautifully for snack ideas, food ideas, and crowd-pleasing bites.

Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 cups warm water

2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

9 cups water

1/2 cup baking soda

1 large egg, beaten

1 tablespoon coarse pretzel salt

Instructions

1. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.

2. Add the flour, salt, and melted butter. Mix until a dough forms.

3. Knead the dough for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

5. Preheat the oven to 425°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

6. Bring 9 cups of water to a boil in a large pot, then carefully stir in the baking soda.

7. Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 12 inches long.

8. Cut each rope into 1-inch bite-size pieces.

9. Drop the dough pieces into the baking soda bath in small batches for 20 to 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon.

10. Arrange the bites on the prepared baking sheets.

11. Brush the tops with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse pretzel salt.

12. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until deep golden brown.

13. Serve warm with mustard, cheese dip, or your favorite sauce.

Notes

Do not skip the baking soda bath, because that quick dip is what gives the pretzel bites their classic chewy exterior and deep golden color.
