Description

If you’re ready to elevate your meatloaf game, this Irresistible French Onion Meatloaf is your next must-make. Inspired by the flavors of classic French onion soup, it’s a comfort food dream—sweet caramelized onions, juicy ground beef, melty Gruyère cheese, and a perfectly seasoned blend that brings it all together. Whether you’re planning an easy dinner, craving cozy food ideas, or searching for a quick weeknight meal that impresses, this easy recipe is it. Great for dinner ideas with a twist and even better the next day as leftovers.

Ingredients

1 ½ pounds ground beef

2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced

1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese

2 large eggs

¾ cup breadcrumbs

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon butter (for caramelizing onions)

Instructions

1. Thinly slice the onions and caramelize them in butter over medium heat for 25–30 minutes until golden and sweet. Set aside.

2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, eggs, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, thyme, salt, pepper, and half of the caramelized onions. Mix gently.

3. Shape the mixture into a loaf on a parchment-lined sheet or place in a loaf pan.

4. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 40 minutes.

5. Remove from oven, top with remaining caramelized onions and cheese.

6. Return to oven for another 10–15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

7. Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Don’t rush the caramelized onions—they’re what give the meatloaf that signature flavor.

Letting the meatloaf rest after baking is crucial—it helps retain the juices for perfect slicing.
