Ingredients
For the Meatloaf Base:
1 lb ground beef
1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
2 tbsp ketchup
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp garlic powder
Salt and pepper to taste
For the Mac and Cheese Layer:
2 cups elbow macaroni
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (plus more for topping)
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups milk (whole milk preferred)
1/2 tsp mustard powder (optional)
Salt to taste
Topping:
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Make the meatloaf base: In a bowl, combine beef, onion, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Press into a greased 9×13 inch dish and bake 25 minutes.
- Cook macaroni in salted boiling water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Make cheese sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan. Whisk in flour, cook 1 minute, then gradually add milk. Cook until thick. Stir in mustard powder and cheese until smooth.
- Combine macaroni and cheese sauce. Spread over meatloaf base. Top with extra cheese.
- Bake again for 15-20 minutes until bubbly and golden.
