Ingredients

1 lb (450g) ground beef

1 small onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

2 tbsp tomato paste

1 tsp sugar

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

Salt and pepper, to taste

1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

2 tbsp olive oil

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 lb (450g) spaghetti

Fresh parsley or basil, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
  2. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess fat.
  3. Stir in tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, sugar, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (optional), salt, and pepper. Simmer uncovered on low heat for 25-30 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, cook spaghetti in a pot of salted boiling water until al dente. Drain well.
  5. Combine spaghetti with the meat sauce and toss to coat. Serve hot, topped with Parmesan and fresh herbs.
