Description

Craving something warm, savory, and utterly satisfying? This Runza Casserole is your answer. A flaky puff pastry crust hugs a savory filling of seasoned ground beef, tender cabbage, and golden onions—just like the iconic Midwestern sandwich but made easier in casserole form. Whether you’re planning weeknight dinners, potluck food ideas, or just want easy dinner ideas that deliver big comfort, this recipe nails it. It’s an ideal choice for fans of hearty meals, comfort food lovers, and anyone looking for simple, cozy food ideas.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef

2 cups chopped cabbage

1 medium yellow onion, chopped

1 clove garlic, minced

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

2 puff pastry sheets, thawed

1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.

2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.

3. Add chopped onion and cabbage to the skillet. Sauté until tender, about 7–10 minutes.

4. Stir in garlic, salt, and pepper. Cook another minute.

5. Roll out one puff pastry sheet and place it in the bottom of the baking dish.

6. Spread the meat and cabbage mixture over the pastry, then top with shredded cheese.

7. Cover with the second puff pastry sheet. Press edges to seal.

8. Brush the top with egg wash for a golden finish.

9. Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes or until puff pastry is golden brown and fully cooked.

10. Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Be sure the puff pastry is fully thawed before using, or it may crack during assembly.

You can substitute ground sausage or turkey for beef if desired.
