  • 250 g wholemeal flour
  • 100 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar or molasses
  • 300 ml buttermilk
  • 25 g butter (optional)

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a baking sheet or line with parchment paper.
  • Mix the flours, baking soda, salt, and brown sugar in a large bowl.
  • Add buttermilk and stir gently until a sticky dough forms.
  • Shape into a round loaf, cut a cross on top.
  • Bake for 35–45 minutes until golden brown and hollow when tapped.

Notes

Best eaten fresh. Wrap in a towel or freeze slices to keep longer.
